UK retail sales had a big month in February, beating the expectations of economists who had predicted stuttering growth in the month, according to the latest data from the ONS.
The volume of goods sold in stores and online rose 1.4% percent, beating the 0.4% gain forecasted by economists. It left sales down 1.4% in the latest three months, the biggest quarterly drop since early 2010.
Sales rose across the board last month, with household goods increasing to 3.7% and clothing growing 1%. Sales were up 3.7% from last year. Excluding auto sales, they rose 1.3% on the month.
Sterling rose after this data against both the Dollar and the Euro, Reaching 1.2515 and 1.1611.
