U.K. mortgage approvals rose more than expected in June in a sign of continued momentum in the housing market. Borrowing to businesses fell by the most on record.
Home-loan approvals climbed to 66,582 from an uphill amended 64,826 in May, compared to 66,000 predicted.
The figures shine with recent surveys showing revived strength in the housing market following the May general election as employment prospects improve, wages increase and households take advantage of record-low mortgage rates. In comparison to lending to non-financial businesses which fell by 5.5 billion pounds last month which is said to be the biggest drop since records began in May 2011.
The Pound strengthened for a third consecutive day against the Euro after the Fed policy makers said on Wednesday that they were satisfied with the U.S.’s progress toward full employment, increasing speculation of rate increase, as soon as September. Many believe that the BOE will be the second major central bank to increase rates after the Fed, and growth data earlier this week only emboldened wagers that Britain’s getting closer to acting.
The Pound rose 0.6% to 1.4289 against the Euro yesterday afternoon. The Pound had little change against the Dollar trading at 1.5612 against the Dollar.
