Osborne’s Dream of British ‘Makers’ Kept at Bay by Strong Pound

George Osborne’s plan to escort Britain’s recovery away from domestic consumer spending is being prevented at every turn.

First obstructed by recession in the Euro area, manufacturers are now up against the Pound at a seven-year-high, while Greece’s debt crisis is further dimming the outlook for the currency region.

Manufacturing is lagging the broader economy, hardly growing in the past four years even as services surged, and its annual performance in the past three months was the worst since 2013.

The pound rose 0.1% to 1.5379 against the Dollar yesterday afternoon, having declined 1.6% in the previous two days. It touched 1.5330 on Wednesday, the lowest since June 9. Sterling has dropped 3.5% since touching this year’s high of 1.5930 on June 18. The Pound strengthened for the first time in three days versus the euro, gaining 0.5% to 1.3931.
