Pound races on Carney’s rate comments 

The Pound has reached its highest level in more than 6 years against the Euro as Mark Carney pushes for a rates increase sooner.

The Pound reached its strongest level since 2007 against the Euro today after the Bank of England governor said a yesterday that the end of record-low interest rates is in sight and the time for such a move will become much clearer by the end of the year. The remarks come after Carney and fellow policy maker David Miles said on July 14 that the time was coming to raise the key interest rate from 0.5%, where it’s been since March 2009.

Many do not expect a boost until May 2016 at the earliest.  That compares with August as recent as last week

The Pound gained 0.3% to 1.4380 against the Euro this morning, and touched 1.4394 which is the strongest since November 2007. It has risen by 3.5% this week, the most since January 2009. The Pound rose by 0.4% against the Dollar reaching levels of 1.5666.
