Pound Falls As Boris Announces He Wants Out

The Pound fell the most in more than a year after Boris Johnson (the UK London Mayor) said he’ll campaign for the U.K. to leave the EU in a June referendum.

Sterling dropped at least 1.2% against every one of its 16 major peers, reversing an advance made on Friday when PM David Cameron secured a deal on membership terms with EU leaders in Brussels.

A telephone poll carried out on Saturday shows 48% of respondents want the U.K. to stay in the EU, compared with 33% who would vote to leave and 19% who are undecided.

The Pound fell 1.6% to 1.4181 against the Dollar as of 8:38 a.m., set for the biggest decline since Jan. 2, 2015. While the currency is down 3.6% this year, it remains above an almost seven-year low of 1.4080 reached in January. Sterling also fell against the Euro to 1.2766.
