Pound volatility ahead of the election.  

The Pound’s volatility over the election has surpassed the Scottish independence referendum as a source of short-term volatility.

With just two days left of Britain’s tightest election since the 1970s, has seen a great deal of volatility on the pound against the Dollar, we have seen sterling climbed to as high as 18.6%, the most since May 2010. In September, before Scotland voted to remain part of the U.K., the measure peaked at 17.5%.

Opinion polls suggest neither Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservatives nor Ed Miliband’s Labour Party will win the election outright. With the voting results due Friday morning, both sides will be calculating whether they can put together a majority with the support of one or more smaller parties, including the Scottish National Party, which campaigned for independence in last year’s referendum.

The Pound was little changed at $1.5129 this morning, after dropping 2.1% from 1.5489 in the previous three days. It strengthened 0.7 percent to €1.362  against the per Euro.
