Pound strengthens to five-week high.
The Pound climbed to a five-week high against the Dollar as the prospect of the general election with no outright winner in their stride.
Polls indicated that neither the Conservative nor Labour parties will win enough support on May 7 to govern alone. Given the likelihood an comprises to form a workable coalition.
An executive director of U.K corporate foreign exchange at Nomura Intl said “Some sort of coalition is now priced in, so shocks to the market should be limited.” It does seem that the market’s focus isn’t directly on the general election right now, allowing the pound to piggy-back on the Dollar weakness.
The Pound rose 0.5% to $1.5132 this morning, having touched $1.5145, the highest since March 18. It was little changed at €1.392 against the Euro.
