Pound Tumbles as EU Uncertainty Progresses
The Pound crashed to the lowest level in two months against the Dollar as uncertainty about a potential British exit from the EU continued to build.
The Pound plunged the most since February on Friday after an poll showed a 10-point lead for ‘Leave.’ Surveys at the weekend were less stark, with one online poll showing 44% support for Britain staying in the EU and 42% against, and a survey on Sunday showing 43% of U.K. respondents in favour of a so-called Brexit and 42% for ‘Remain.’
U.K. Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne called for pro-EU businesses to speak up about their concerns as polls suggest momentum is building for a vote to leave.
The pound fell 0.9% to 1.4129 against the Dollar as of 10:19 a.m., having earlier touched 1.4116, the lowest since April 14. It fell 1.1% to 1.2533 against the Euro.
