The Pound touched its lowest level against the Euro since mid-August as talks by some British officials indicated that the U.K. could break away from the EU earlier than expected.
Sterling fell against all of its Group-of-10 peers. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson suggested on Sunday that the government will formally generate an exit by May 2017. Speculation has been mounting that some officials are in support of a so-called ‘hard Brexit,’ where the U.K. would surrender access to the EU’s single market in return for securing control over immigration and being immune from paying into the bloc’s budget.
The Pound fell 0.4% to 1.1507 against the Euro as of 10:47 a.m. London time, having touched 1.1496 earlier, the weakest since Aug. 16. Sterling fell 0.2% to 1.2938 against the Dollar. It touched a 31-year low of 1.2798 on July 6 and is down 13% against the Dollar since the June 23 referendum.
